What is the “Environmental Protection and Safety” grant program?
The “Environmental Protection and Safety” grant program is a federal initiative of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, administered by the Federal Office for Goods Transport (BALM). It supports German commercial freight transport companies in making their vehicle fleets safer and more environmentally friendly. The program is the successor to the former de minimis subsidy and has been administered since 2024 under the name “Environmental Protection and Safety (US).” It was originally introduced to offset the financial burden of the truck toll and now specifically supports measures to digitize and modernize your fleet.
Funding is provided for, among other things, software solutions for digitizing logistics within vehicle fleets – such as Tourbosoft’s route planning software and other complementary modules – as well as training and consulting services. The goal is to reduce emissions and improve traffic safety.
Eligible for funding are companies with heavy-duty commercial vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons that transport goods for commercial purposes and hold a valid license under the German Road Haulage Act. The funding covers up to 80% of eligible costs and applies to various measures aimed at modernizing and digitizing the fleet.
The subsidy is definitely worth it, as it significantly reduces investment costs and makes purchasing modern software and training particularly attractive for your company.
The grant program runs annually. In 2026, it will begin later than usual because the 2025 budget planning process at the federal level was delayed, and the funding could only be released retroactively.
Which services are eligible for funding?
Through the “Environmental Protection and Safety” (US) funding program, software solutions, training, and consulting services from Tourbosoft are eligible for funding. Here is an overview of the available measures.
Tourbosoft Software
All fleet management software solutions from Tourbosoft are eligible for funding. These include route planning, the vehicle app, customer notifications, internal transparency modules, as well as digital proof of delivery and 3D loading. Thanks to the funding, the payback period is significantly reduced – your investment pays off faster.
Training from Tourbosoft
Training programs are also eligible for funding, for example, for dispatchers, logistics and warehouse managers, or drivers who work with route planning or the driver app. Your employees will learn how to use the software efficiently, complete daily tasks more efficiently and safely, and avoid common sources of error. At the same time, you’ll improve acceptance of new digital processes within your company. Take advantage of the funding to invest not only in technology but also specifically in your team’s expertise.
Consulting from Tourbosoft
Consulting services related to automation and digitalization concepts are also eligible for funding. These include, for example, the analysis of your logistics processes, existing structures, and data and information flows. The goal is to identify potential savings and areas for improvement and to future-proof your processes. We particularly recommend our workshop day, during which we work together on-site to uncover concrete opportunities for optimization.
How does the application process work, and what are the steps involved?
Applying for the Environmental Protection & Safety Grant involves five steps:
1. Submit the grant application online
Starting April 14 at 9:00 a.m.!
The grant application is submitted online via the portal of the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM). The application period begins on April 14, 2026, at 9 a.m. The deadline has not yet been announced: the grant application must be submitted by that date. However, the electronic application portal may close early if budget funds are exhausted. Applications will be processed in the order they are received – those who submit early have the best chances. Our tip: Prepare your application in advance and submit it promptly at 9 a.m.
Enter the total number of vehicles in your fleet that weigh more than 3.5 tons. It does not matter how many vehicles are actually scheduled using the Tourbo.route route planning software or equipped with the Tourbosoft driver app. The only factor that matters is the total number of physical vehicles in your fleet.
Important: You do not need to provide details about specific measures when submitting your application. You do not need to specify Tourbosoft products or funding categories, nor do you need to include invoices from Tourbosoft. On the contrary: Submit the application first; everything else will follow later, once funding has been approved.
2. Wait for the grant approval
After you submit your application, BALM will review your documents. Once your application has been approved, you will receive the official grant approval notice. This notice will also specify the amount of funding available to you. Important: You may not begin implementation until you have received this approval. Any contracts or orders placed prior to this are not eligible for funding.
3. Hire Tourbosoft
Once your funding has been approved, you can place a binding order with Tourbosoft for the software solutions, training, and consulting services you need and begin using them.
4. Submit a statement of use
Until the application deadline!
Once the project is complete, please submit the statement of funds to BALM by December 31, 2026, at the latest, including details of the settled Tourbosoft invoice.
On the BALM website, you will find the video tutorial “FP Environmental Protection and Safety 2025 Usage Report,” which will help you complete the usage report.
In the usage report, you will find a table where you can assign the measures for your eligible Tourbosoft solutions to individual drop-down fields:
